Black History Month is a time to recognize the achievements of global Black leaders and all of their contributions throughout history.  This February, we celebrate these accomplishments and highlight a few of our connections to some noteworthy Black Icons to our shores.

Cat Island — Sir Sidney Poitier’s Boyhood Home

Located in Central Bahamas, Cat Island is quiet and unassuming but has unique treasures to offer. It is home to an untouched landscape that is perfect for diving, kiteboarding, and meandering along miles of rolling hills, nature trails, and an eight-mile pink sand beach. Academy Award-winning actor, Sir Sidney Poitier, grew up on Cat Island, just outside of Arthur's Town. He went on to become the first Black person to win an Academy Award for Best Actor for Lilies of the Field in 1964. Here are some popular things to do in Sir Sidney's childhood home.  

  • Try delicious local dishes by visiting some of Cat Island's restaurants 
  • Go diving to seek encounters with oceanic whitetip sharks and other marine life  
  • Witness breathtaking views of the island by visiting Mount Alvervia— the highest point in The Bahamas.

Bimini — Dr. Martin Luther King's Favourite Sanctuary 

As the closest island of The Bahamas to the United States, Bimini is an easy blissful escape. It was here Dr. Martin Luther King penned his much celebrated Noble Peace Prize acceptance speech. He described it as "somewhere tranquil" which provided him with quiet solitude to clear his thoughts. Some of Dr. Martin Luther Kings's favourite things to do in Bimini included:  

  • Enjoying mouthwatering conch fritters at Bimini Big Game Club  
  • Taking a boat ride tour through the mangroves with Ansil Saunders— Bimini’s boat builder and a good friend of Dr. Martin Luther King.

The Tale of a Legend from Cat Island
