It is the last
Kerosene Burning
Lighthouse
in the world

— an integral part of local life and
the identity of an entire island.

For the people who call this island home, it's their legacy, part of their DNA, what they leave behind for their children and their children's children; it's something worth preserving.

The red and white, candy-stripe lighthouse on the banks of Hope Town is one of the most recognizable landmarks in The Bahamas.

Although it is currently closed to visitors, the Elbow Reef Lighthouse hopes to reopen soon.

Keeper of
the Light

Like his father and grandfather before him, Jeffery Forbes Jr. climbs 101 steps each day to crank a hand winch 427 times every 2 hours. For the last keeper of the light, it's more a labour of love and less a duty.

Sailors look up to the red stripes that are visible by day, and the white stripes visible at sundown. At night, flares beam from atop the tower every 15 seconds—a white sun visible from 20 miles out.

Lighting
the Way

The mission of the not-for-profit Elbow Reef Society is simple: restore and preserve the legacy of the Elbow Reef Lighthouse. The people of Hope Town share a deep connection with this place. Every day, they gather, waiting, watching for the light. They use lofty terms like “It’s a part of our soul” and “It’s in our blood” because this candy-stripe lighthouse is their legacy; it’s the story they leave behind.
