The Gerace Research Center, formerly the Bahamian Field Station, occupies an old U.S. Navy base at Graham's Harbour on San Salvador's northern coast. It has been in operation for over 50 years as a center for academic research in the areas of Archaeology, Biology, Geology and Marine Sciences. It provides accommodations and air transportation for researchers from around the world and professors who wish to teach their students in this unique environment.
Locally, the Center supports the community by providing potable drinking water and other necessities. Also, it assists with sustainable efforts to protect indigenous species, such as sheltering the remaining few critically endangered San Salvador Rock Iguanas.
