Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation Bolsters Commitment to Sustainable Efforts, Ecotourism, and Combatting Climate Change

NASSAU, Bahamas, 21 April 2022 — Visitors from around the world are attracted to The Bahamas because of its vast natural resources and diverse ecosystems. However, climate change is a threat to natural wealth, making it more important than ever to preserve and protect the archipelago and to introduce initiatives that steer it towards a more sustainable future.

“Tourism is the heartbeat of our economy, but our beautiful islands and cays need us to protect them. As we rebuild Abaco, Grand Bahama Island and Ragged Island, we are faced with a constant reminder of the importance of this work,” said Latia Duncombe, Acting Director General, Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation. “Our commitment to combat climate change will greatly benefit citizens and visitors for generations to come.”

New initiatives under the administration’s “Blueprint for Change” are aimed at preserving the island nation’s natural beauty and contributing more to global sustainability practices. Examples include:

Global Representation: The Bahamas is a proud member of various UN climate change committees, as well as the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, which is responsible for establishing global standards in destination management and promoting sustainable tourism worldwide.

Bahamas Destination Stewardship Council Initiative: This initiative was launched to promote more responsible tourism, environmental awareness and a healthier lifestyle overall at the community level. For example, four islands, Eleuthera, Harbour Island, Andros and Exuma are actively organising councils comprised of members of both the public and private sector to discuss and design eco-friendly and culturally enriching new infrastructure.

Private Sector Sustainable Innovations: The island nation encourages scientific innovation such as Coral Vita, a Freeport-based company that creates high-tech coral farms in order to restore dying reefs. Coral Vita won Prince William’s prestigious 2021 Earthshot Prize, which incentivises repairing the environment.

The Bahamas Conference of Youth on Climate Change: The Bahamas will host a regional Youth Conference on Climate Change from 6 to 8 July 2022. Programming will educate students on the effects of climate change, advocate for climate action, and allow Bahamians to exchange ideas with their international peers.

Cans for Kids Pilot Aluminum Recycling Program: A partnership with Cans for Kids will raise funds for essential programs aimed at educating the Bahamian youth on the long-term benefits of recycling, reducing solid waste from landfills and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

While The Bahamas has a plethora of sustainability efforts underway, there are many local spots that are already excelling when it comes to conservation and ecotourism. Check out these stunning destinations for some the best eco-friendly adventures on the islands:

Lucayan National Park: One of the most popular sites in The Bahamas, Lucayan National Park protects one of the world’s longest charted underwater cave systems, preserved remains of the Lucayan Indians and natural environments like pine forests and mangrove creeks.

Abaco National Park: Spanning 20,500 acres, the Abaco National Park protects the Bahama Parrot and its breeding grounds. During every spring breeding season, thousands of the birds find refuge in the park.

Dean’s Blue Hole: Long Island is home to the world’s second-deepest blue hole; Dean’s Blue Hole is 663 feet deep and enclosed on three sides by a natural rock.

Andros Barrier Reef: Over 124 miles long, the Andros Barrier Reef is the third-largest reef in the world. Conservation efforts include creating two national parks to protect it: Andros North and South Marine Parks.
